In fact, an ad for a used Anthem MRX 520 receiver went up today. I'll probably pull the trigger on this deal in the next couple days, unless something shows up on the local used market that is too good to pass up. I'm still using an 'ancient' and not a console gamer at all, but the latest hdmi can't hurt. The main selling points for this unit are Dirac Live, and correctly implemented hdmi 2.1. I called my 'guy' at the B&M store that sold me my speakers and he offered me a very nice discount on a brand-new Onkyo NR-7100. And it definitely seems that room correction has potential to improve the sound and is one of the main features that differentiates the various manufacturers and product ranges. It's a good point that a 2.0/2.1 system is probably overpriced for what you get compared to a more full-featured AVR. Thanks for your input everyone! This discussion has helped me narrow down my options.
Can a cheap-ass Onkyo deliver the goods in this regard? Do I need to step up to Marantz, or even higher to Anthem? My hunch is the Onkyo is the answer, but I'm wondering what y'all think. For now I want the best bang/buck AVR that will sound decent.

Some day, my music system will be de-coupled from my TV and I'll connect my record player to a 1974 Sansui (or something). I'm willing to spend up to about $1500 USD but if I can get away with $600 you best believe that's my preference. And I'm now at the price point where just a couple hundred bucks over the Marantz can net me an Anthem receiver and their stellar audio quality rep. My price tag just doubled in this scenario. If it _is_ true, and I want to go Marantz, then I'm also going to have to move up the ladder to something more powerful (such as SR5015). But some people say that's marketing BS to justify their premium price tag. Of the big mainstream AVR makers, Marantz has the best music rep. But is that really going to make a difference with a 2.0 system in a small-ish room? The other factor to consider is that Monitor Audio Silver 8s are 4 ohm speakers so I'm going to need 100 wpc (minimum) to drive them imo. My only minimum requirement with this purchase is that music sounds good through it. This is probably where my question - do all AVRs (basically sound the same - comes in. And there's a 2-channel Marantz with hdmi switching that outputs 75 watts per channel and is a couple hundred bucks more. There is an equivalent Denon that is not well reviewed, so I'd probably skip that.

I want HDMI for ease of use and other AVR mod cons like bluetooth, wifi, etc.įrankly, the best bang for the buck seems to be the Onkyo TX8270: 2 channels, 100 watts per, hdmi switching. I've been going around in circles trying to decide the best AVR for my needs. At some point, I might add a sub, but this is all currently set up in a pretty small room and a sub at this juncture is probably overkill (the silver 8s are too arguably, but I already have them). My speakers are a pair of floorstanding Monitor Audio Silver 8s. I have a large record collection, a respectable CD collection, and a bunch of MP3s. On the audio side, I have a CD player and a vintage Dual turntable with a a high-quality cartridge (AT 150MLX) and Moon Audio phono preamp. On the video side, I have an nvidia shield for streaming and a Blu-Ray player. It probably won't live forever, so at some point it will likely be replaced with a 4k OLED (or something, I haven't been paying much attention to TVs). My setup is fairly basic: I have a Panasonic Plasma circa 2010. It might be salvagable with a board replacement, but even if it is, I think there will be a fairly significant wait for that to play out so I'm probably going to buy something new and - if the Yammy gets repaired - I'll sell it (unless I hate the new one and opt to sell it instead). It was/is the Canadian version of the a1030 ftwiw.
